So, a super cool new function of IPhone is head track switch control which allows any IPhone device to be turned into an eye gaze communication device, plus it allows anyone without use of their hands access to IPhone in ways that previously seemed impossible. It really is a game changer in regards to access and I’m appreciative of the Apple team for considering something like this. The woman at Apple Care I spoke with told me she was in a wheelchair, so if you needed another example of why representation maters, it’s because I can’t even imagine how people at Apple even thought to include head tracking unless someone on the team had some experience with it. It’s all very new and it will continue to get better, but I’m excited Maggie can use a phone “just” like all the other kids her age.

Step 1. Open Up Accessibility Controls in Settings on the phone
Step 2. Open up Switch Control
Step 3. Scroll to Head Tracking
Step 5. Select Dwell
Step 6. Choose Tap
Step 7. Change the dwell settings to whatever is appropriate
Step 8. Go back to the switch control menu and make sure auto scanning is selected
Step 9. Click on switches
Step 10. Add New Switch
Step 11. Select Screen
Step 12. Select Full Screen
Step 13. Go back to switches
Step 14. Add New Switch
Step 15. Select Back Tap
Step 16. Select Double Tap
Step 17. Select Home
Step 18. Toggle the switch control on
Step 19. You may need to turn on head tracking in the switch menu. It should automatically scan across and you will have to select it when it lands on head tracking. If that isn’t visible, and head tracking is not working, you can select settings in that same pop up menu.
Hint – Triple tapping the side button will toggle the switch on and off if you need to tap something with your finger.
